Overview
Open Rack V2 is the next generation of Open Rack.
Key Features
- No battery cabinet taking a whole rack space, allowing more space for racks
- Integrated battery backup unit (BBU) on the rack itself
- PSU and BBU health monitoring capabilities
- Remote PSU firmware upgrade functionality
- Total mass of 1600Kgs with up to 1400kg mass capacity for IT gears
- PSU level efficiency is about 96%
- Overall rack efficiency is about 94%
- Power quality is >10% at 10% loads or greater
- Power factor is greater than 0.99 at 50% loads or greater
- Power density is 10.55 W per cubic inch
- 32 open rack units (OU)
- Easily serviceable PDUs from rear side of the rack
Power Innovation
- Eliminate Phase Balance, Titanium at 277V, Li Ion (cost/service)
Cost Reduction
- 1 Bus bar and 2/3 less clip savings, Simpler AC/DC PDU, Power Shelf with 3 PSU
Improve DC Integration and Serviceability
- 87” height line up to containment
- Service PDU in hot aisle without moving rack
ORV2 Compared to ORV1
Comparison at Row Level
- v1 uses a blue battery cabinet to serve 6 racks (3 on left and 3 on right) in case of power outage. This battery cabinet takes a whole rack position.
- In v2, the battery packs are designed as part of the power shelves on the rack itself. This eliminates the need for battery cabinet and saves 4 rack positions in a row.
- In v2, phase balancing is done at the power shelves on the racks, compared to the row level phase balancing on v1.
Comparison at Rack Level
- Power shelves reduced from 3 to 2 - saves 3 open rack units (OU).
- In v1, there are 3 power zones, each power shelf powered the 10 OU zone above it. In v2, each power shelf powers 8 OU above and 8 OU below.
- In v2, power bus bar columns reduced from 3 to 1. Power distribution for 3 columns done at cubby, which holds the servers. This change saves cost.
- In v2, bus bar extended on top to power up the switch. Wedge 100 will get direct power from the bus bar.
- More OUs for IT gears – host and storage: 30 OUs vs 32 OUs
- No DC input to the rack because the battery back up units are integrated within the power shelf.
- Top 3 OU reserved for top of rack network gears (TOR 1OU)
- Total maximum rack power remains same at 12.6K W.
- Total OU remains same at 41 OU.
- Increased mass capacity to 1400kg from 950Kg in v1.
- Rack height increased from 83” to 87”. Hot aisle baffle ships with each rack to adapt rack height to match data center containment height of 95".
Comparison at Power Shelf Level
* v1: 7x 700 W PSUs – 6+1 redundant.
- v2: 3x 3.3 KW PSUs + 3x 3.6 KW Li-Ion battery backup unit (BBU) – 2+1 redundant.
- Total power per shelf: 4.2 KW vs. 6.3 KW.
- Both v1 and v2 are 3 OU height.
- In v2, communication is enabled for PSUs and BBUs. This allows monitoring their health remotely and upgrade of PSU firmware through the TOR.
v1 has a 3 column bus bar, while v2 has a 1 column bar with a different power feed to its bus bar.
Comparison at PDU Level
- There are 6 types of PDUs used in v2 with 3 different voltage ratings, 1 for Cold Storage, 1 for 30A, and 1 DC PDU for the switch (not required for Wedge 100).
- v2 PDUs are serviceable from rear side of the rack, a major improvement from v1.
- Cheaper than v1 PDUs.
Open Rack V2 Variations
There are 2 variations of ORV2 other than the standard configuration of 230 voltage or 277 voltage AC input. (Unless otherwise noted, the details described in this section refer to the standard configuration.)
The variations are:
- Cold Storage Troika configuration.
- Stingray V2, a 208V AC version of v2 rack.
Cold Storage
- 3 racks are managed through a single TOR switch: Troika configuration.
- There is only 1 power shelf per rack with 1 PSU to meet the low power requirement of the rack - redundancy is not a major requirement for cold storage racks.
- The power bus bars for the top and bottom zone are shorted in the middle to allow the bottom power shelf to feed the entire rack.
- There are no BBUs - redundancy is not a major requirement for cold storage racks.
Stingray
- 208V AC version, 3Phase input, dual line redundancy shelf.
- Same PSU as v1 Stingray: 6x 2.1KW – 3+3 redundant.
- Addition of communication module to enable monitoring of PSUs.
- No BBUs because these racks go into colocations where UPS provides backup in case of power failure.
